Protect the Freedom to Read In New York!

Dear Legislator,

As your constituent and someone who cares deeply about providing our students and communities with access to a wide, varied and diverse array of books and materials in schools and community libraries, I am writing to encourage you to pass both S.1099 (May)/A.7777 (Simone) and S.1100 (May)/A.3119 (Kelles).

Providing students with access to the widest array of books and materials available will foster student engagement and enrichment and instill a love of reading.

The passage and enactment of S.1099 (May)/A.7777 (Simone) will ensure that school boards in our state allow Certified School Library Media Specialists (school librarians) and school libraries in their district to have large, diverse and well-curated collections that are both age and developmentally appropriate.

The passage of S.1100 (May)/A.3119 (Kelles) is critical to ensure that all New Yorkers have access to a broad range of books and materials at their local library to develop and grow the love of reading, broaden their views and perceptions and help make informed decisions with the greatest amount of information available.

Both school libraries and public libraries should serve as centers of learning and knowledge.

Accordingly, I urge you to work with your conference and your leadership to ensure the passage of both S.1099/A.7777 and S.1100/A.3119.
