Subject:
New York's Schools Need A Timely Budget!
Message:
Dear Legislator,
As a constituent who cares deeply about public education, I am urging you to push for the swift passage of a state budget that fully funds our public schools and allows them to plan their own budgets. Budget deadlines for public school districts are rapidly approaching and with the state budget in limbo, it makes it difficult for schools to prepare for the coming school year.
By April 22, districts, other than small city districts, must finalize all items to appear on the ballot for voters. By April 25, districts other than small city districts must distribute military ballots. By April 28, every district must submit "property tax report card" data to the State Education Department, effectively meaning districts must adopt all budget proposals they will ask voters to decide on by the 28th, a Monday. For small city districts, the dates are May 5 for finalizing items to appear on the ballot and distributing military ballots by May 6.
Currently, the Legislature is scheduled to be on break from later this week until April 28. This current timeline, with no budget, could have consequences for local budget processes. The greater a school’s reliance on state aid, the more uncertainty there is surrounding their budget process. In essence, our most needy districts and students are the most negatively affected by a late state budget.
We urge the Legislature and Governor to quickly come together on a budget agreement that works for all New Yorkers and effectively supports New York's public schools.
Sincerely,
