Subject:
Demand Bell-to-Bell Cellphone Restrictions in Schools!
Message:
Dear Legislator:
The evidence is clear: our students need distraction-free learning environments, and Gov. Hochul's proposed statewide bell-to-bell cellphone restrictions are a remedy that's already proving effective. Schools that have implemented similar policies report truly game-changing results.
We demand lawmakers support Gov. Hochul's proposal. We cannot compromise on our student's well-being and mental health, and there's no time to delay.
In school hallways, cellphones are almost as ubiquitous as backpacks. Families, educators, administrators and mental health professionals agree that the constant use of personal electronic devices severely disrupt learning during the school day.
Under the governor's proposal, school districts, BOCES, and charter schools would be required to adopt policies prohibiting non-school-issued internet-enabled devices, such as smartphones, during the school day — from bell to bell. Schools would be required to provide on-site storage of devices and develop a process for parents to contact students during school hours. The proposal includes limited exemptions for instructional purposes, student health needs, and translation services. By implementing the restrictions contained in the executive budget proposal, we can give students approximately seven hours each school day to be fully present and free from the pressures of phones and social media.
Cellphones interfere with students' academic performance, social and emotional growth and mental health. These devices hamper students' ability to focus on lessons and deprive them of crucial opportunities for face-to-face communication and genuine connection. When students are on their cellphones, they can be exposed to toxic content, cyberbullying, exploitation and unrealistic standards.
Our students' mental health and academic success cannot be subject to half-measures or compromise.
There should be no compromise on our children's well-being. As a concerned constituent, I demand the full implementation of Gov. Hochul's plan.
Sincerely,
