Support Safe Storage of Firearms!

Dear Legislator,
As a constituent who cares deeply about public education, I urge you to support S.6980-a (Mayer) / A7517-a (Benedetto), which amends the education law to require the distribution of written materials regarding child access prevention and safe storage of firearms to students.
In response to the rise in firearm-related tragedies in recent years, New York state has made important strides in enacting gun safety laws associated with the safe storage of firearms, but awareness of these laws remains minimal, and more should be done to make parents and guardians aware of these important laws.
The provisions of this bill will require the State Education Department (SED) to develop and school districts to distribute information pertaining to county- and local-specific laws related to child access prevention and the safe storage of firearms. School districts would be required to make this information available to parents and guardians at the beginning of the first semester, or quarter of the regular school year. School districts would also be required to maintain this content on their websites.
The passage and enactment of this proposal will ensure that all parents and guardians are provided with up-to-date information pertaining to current child access prevention laws and laws related to the safe storage of firearms.
