Subject:
Improve the Fiscal Health of Public Schools: Fix the Tax Cap!
Message:
Dear Legislator,
As a constituent who cares deeply about public education, I respectfully ask that you amend the tax cap, which was made permanent in the 2019 state budget and continues to cause long-term fiscal harm to public school districts and municipalities. The state can address this problem by enacting commonsense amendments that will continue to provide savings to property taxpayers while helping to ensure the immediate and long-term fiscal stability of school districts and municipalities.
I would ask that you consider legislation to make the tax cap two percent or the Consumer Price Index (CPI), whichever is greater, rather than two percent or less, which is current law. I would also ask you to amend the threshold to override the tax cap so school districts would need only a simple majority of voters rather than the sixty percent super majority required under current law.
These modifications to the tax cap will greatly benefit the fiscal health of public school districts and municipalities throughout the state. By strengthening our communities, we can attract families and businesses to our state, providing a positive outcome for all involved.
Thank you for your consideration of these very important issues. I respectfully ask that you bring up this issue with your conference, and I would greatly appreciate a response to this email.
Sincerely,
