Subject:
Support the More Teaching Less Testing Act
Message:
Dear Member of Congress,
As your constituent and someone who cares deeply about public education, I strongly urge you to co-sponsor H.R.1741, the More Teaching Less Testing Act, introduced by Congressman Jamaal Bowman. Should this bill become law, it will help to address the chronic underfunding of public education as well as remove the focus from high-pressure standardized testing.
Annual standardized testing in grades 3-8, as required by the Every Student Succeeds Act, negatively effects what is taught in our nation’s public schools and how it is taught. These snapshots do not truly measure learning, comprehension or problem-solving skills, which are the skills that have made public school students thrive and America succeed.
The More Teaching Less Testing Act will improve assessments and accountability and meet students where they are and how they learn; eliminate the current 3-8 high stakes standardized testing in favor of designing assessments that work for students and educators; quadruple the funding for Title I; and prohibit states from using federally mandated statewide assessments as the dominant or sole factor for graduation decisions, teacher evaluations and school rating systems.
Our public schools should be supported so they can foster curiosity, creativity and collaboration and allow each child, no matter who they are or where they are from, to reach their full potential.
Thank you for your consideration of this important matter. I look forward to a reply to my e-mail.
Sincerely,
