Rebuilding Our Nation's Schools
As a constituent who cares deeply about public education, I urge you to include funding and resources for public schools as a part of the upcoming reconciliation package currently being negotiated by the United States Senate and House of Representatives.
Public schools, colleges and universities educate over 65 million students throughout our nation, and their health, safety and wellbeing cannot be overlooked in this reconciliation package. The impact of the pandemic, coupled with decades of disinvestment and side-stepping the physical needs of our schools has led to crumbling school buildings, unsafe drinking water, classrooms with extreme temperatures and unhealthy air for many of our students. Propping up old or outdated HVAC systems is both expensive and wasteful and can result in health and safety issues for students and educators alike.
Significant school infrastructure funding, which is provided in the Reopen and Rebuild America's Schools Act, must be included in the upcoming reconciliation package. Providing students with safe, clean and healthy schools will ensure that students have the proper tools and conditions to help promote learning.
Providing for a robust school infrastructure package will also create good union jobs and lift local communities. Furthermore, investments in new, cleaner and more efficient technologies will provide relief to taxpayers and provide on-the-job training for students involved in BOCES and the trades.
Thank you for your consideration of this important matter. I ask that you raise awareness of this issue with your conference and leadership, and I look forward to a reply to my email.
