Include State Revenue in the Enacted Budget
Dear Legislator, As a constituent who is supportive of high quality public education, higher education and health care in our state, I am writing to ask for your support in ensuring that the additional revenue streams that were proposed in the Senate and Assembly one-house budgets be included in the final enacted budget. This additional funding will ensure that every student, from pre-k through higher education, has access to a high-quality public education and that all New Yorkers have access to much needed health care and social supports during this critical time.
The 2021-22 executive budget proposal cut expense-based aids for public schools, funding for higher education and educator professional development programs, just to name a few. I believe these cuts are unnecessary and that our state has another option ― asking the wealthiest New Yorkers to pay their fair share.
Accordingly, I ask that you support the passage of the various common-sense revenue proposals that were included in the Senate and Assembly one-house budget proposals. None of these proposals would raise any taxes on workers or low-income and middle-class New Yorkers.
Though we hear opponents of these measures claim that the ultrawealthy will flee New York State if these measures are included in the state budget, it is simply not true. Numerous studies and economic data pertaining to the income of wealthy New Yorkers and the luxury real estate market ― and even news articles in New York dailies ― all speak to the ultrawealthy staying in New York, keeping their business here and moving back to our state after the initial COVID migration. The ultrawealthy have known all along that New York is the place to find, build and grow their fortunes.
The resources provided by these state-level revenue streams will complement the federal funding provided by the American Rescue Plan that was recently signed into law. Moreover, this revenue will help to ensure that the state does not face a fiscal cliff once the federal money is spent by schools, local governments and the state.
The money generated from these new, stable state revenue sources will help to fund our state and its social programs and provide our public schools, colleges and health care institutions with the resources they require to properly educate their students and treat those seeking care. Therefore, I urge you to support these legislative initiatives and work with your leadership to ensure that these revenue sources are included in the enacted state budget.
Thank you for your consideration of these important issues, and I would appreciate a reply to my email. Sincerely,
