Urging Congress to Advise President to Implement the Defense Production Act
As a constituent, I urge you to call upon the President to implement the provisions of the Defense Production Act (DPA) that he invoked yesterday, to assist our citizens and nation during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Health experts have cited the high probability of hospitals and medical staff becoming overwhelmed by the high numbers of COVID-19 patients in the coming weeks and months. The U.S. medical system does not have the capacity — enough hospital beds and ventilators for patients, and respirator masks and personal protection equipment (PPE) for medical workers — to deal with the number of cases we expect to see. As our nation has done in prior times of severe crises, we once again call upon our federal government to provide leadership by implementing the provisions of the DPA to ensure that American workers throughout our nation can manufacture these critically needed items. This will not only ensure that our health care system has the tools it needs to do its job but will also help keep many Americans employed.
The DPA was enacted during the Cold War and allows the President to require American industries to manufacture products deemed necessary for national defense. Furthermore, once invoked and implemented, the DPA will allow the U.S. government to incentivize a company that already makes emergency medical supplies to make more of them.
It is imperative that the White House implement the Defense Production Act and expand our industrial production and the supply of basic resources and medical protective equipment.
Thank you for your consideration of this important matter. I respectfully ask that you bring up this issue with your leadership. I look forward to a reply to my letter.
