As a constituent and a union member, I write seeking your support to help protect the growing number of "gig economy" workers across the state.
The "gig economy" is one of the fasting growing employment sectors of the state and national workforce. These workers who choose to pursue employment opportunities offered by apps, include some of my sisters and brothers in New York State United Teachers should be offered employee protections and not subject to wage and tip theft, unfair workplace conditions and other unregulated working conditions that often result in worker injuries.
Unfortunately, the unregulated nature of these app-based jobs allows employers to take advantage of workers. This must be addressed this legislative session.
Companies claim that technology and flexible work hours justify different labor standards, however this claim rings hollow; a worker is a worker and should be protected by the same rights and statutes whether they are driving for a ride share app or teaching the youth of tomorrow at a smart board.
I urge you to bring up this important issue with your conference and leadership, and support provisions to protect workers in the gig economy in the same manner as other workers across New York State. I look forward to a reply to my letter.
