IDEA Full Funding Act
As a concerned constituent and strong supporter of quality public education, I am writing to express my support of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Full Funding Act (S.866/H.R. 1878). This legislation would direct the federal government to fully fund the IDEA program, which provides services to children with disabilities to ensure that they receive a free and appropriate education.
While IDEA was enacted with the promise of providing school districts with funding to cover 40 percent of their special education costs, it has never been met. Currently, the federal government covers 16.3 percent of the cost. More than 450,000 children and students are provided services under IDEA.
Full funding, at the federal level, is necessary to provide educational services to students with disabilities. Local school districts cannot provide these services without this critical funding. The need for these federal funds is particularly vital in New York State as, due to the punitive tax cap, we have a limited ability to raise funds through property taxes. In the absence of full funding, school districts will be forced to make difficult decisions that will negatively impact student programming and services.
Accordingly, I urge you to support this legislation to provide full funding for IDEA. I would appreciate a reply to my correspondence.
