Subject:
Tell your lawmakers to stop the impersonation of unions and protect worker communications.
Message:
Dear Legislator:
As a constituent who cares about the rights of working people, I urge you to pass S.9577-A (Ramos)/A.10835-A (Griffin) to prohibit the false impersonation of an employee organization and provide a civil remedy for unions and individuals harmed by this conduct.
Unions play a vital role in representing public employees, communicating with their membership, enforcing collectively bargained rights and advocating for the workforce. Their effectiveness depends on the integrity of communications issued in their name. In recent years, anti-labor groups have escalated a troubling tactic: falsely impersonating unions or their representatives to mislead employees, create confusion and undermine lawful union activity.
These fraudulent communications — delivered by mail, email, phone or social media — are designed to disrupt union operations, interfere with representation and erode the trust between unions and their members. They are not protected speech; they are deliberate deception. And current law does not provide an adequate remedy to stop them or hold perpetrators accountable.
Passing S.9577-A/A.10835-A would establish a clear legal prohibition against union impersonation and create an enforceable civil remedy. This would deter bad actors, protect the integrity of union communications and ensure that public employees are not misled about their rights and representation.
I respectfully ask that you bring up this issue with your conference and advocate for the passage of S.9577-A/A.10835-A this legislative session.
Sincerely,
